The hiring process is ultra-competitive.
Here are a few ways to stand out, that does Not involve your resume.
- Research about the company, news, the values, the people, the role. It helps to ask pointed questions - this shows your interest.
- Its ok to say 'I don't know'. Be confident you will learn and show how you did that in your past
- Prepare for the 'Why Us?'. And no, 'I want to learn' is not an appropriate answer
- Stalk your interviewer (not creepily!)
- You are not at anyone's mercy. Blend deference & confidence. That is how you stand out.
- Play to your strengths. Taking up a first time managerial role - talk about how you captained your football team.
- Show your passion. If you are applying to a startup. This is key. Not words, actions.
- Ask real questions. Specifics.
- Prove readiness. Blended with past exp, education, passion and ability to learn and scale.
- Use your network for a reference or intro. There is no better buy-in than a well placed reference.
- Follow up, but be empathetic of the interviewer's time.
Hope these help on your next interview.
