You may wish to factory reset your PC for the following reasons:
- you are having lots of problems with it,
- you need to pass it to a colleague,
- Windows first time setup has failed and you wish to try again.
To perform a factory reset
- Restart your PC into ‘Troubleshooting Mode’:
- If your PC is working
First press and hold the SHIFT key on the keyboard. With that key still pressed, click the ’Start’ **button, then ’Power’, and then ’Restart’.
- If your PC is not working
Restart the machine three times in quick succession, not allowing it to start up cleanly/fully each time. E.g. hit CTRL+ALT+DEL or the power button as it is starting up.
- At the 'Choose an option screen', select 'Troubleshoot'.
- At the 'Troubleshoot' screen, select 'Factory Image Restore'.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm and complete the factory reset process.
- This takes some time, and your computer will then restart back into Windows first time setup.
