What I Learned Publishing My First 3 Books in 5 Months

OR HOW I BROKE EVEN

TLDR Summary: I'm a newbie author without a backlist who has been building their author platform since September. I attempted a rapid release of the first 3 books in an Urban Fantasy series over three months into KU.

So how did it go? The title sums it up but let's dig into it.

Timeline:

August

Finished first book and reader magnet novelette then set up an author website, mailing list sequence, and social media pages. Note: I already wrote the first draft of a whole prequel series to this book so I had a firm grasp on many of the characters and world building with a detailed outline of the series arcs so it made writing books 2 and 3 faster than book 1 or the prequels.

September

Started list building and writing book 2

October - (48 paid units - $20)

Did a bunch of group promos on book funnel then published the reader magnet short on amazon

November - (143 paid units - $278)

Published first book with soft launch based on newsletter swaps
