The first line of code of Material UI was written by Hai Nguyen https://github.com/mui/material-ui/commit/28b768913b75752ecf9b6bb32766e27c241dbc46 at Call-Em-All in August 2014. They were working on a refresh of their UI, they were dropping jQuery for React and adopting a brand new design specification Material Design.
