You have heard of ectopic pregnancy, but what about heterotopic pregnancy?

A woman recently shared a story about how she unexpectedly found out she was pregnant. The following week, she started feeling pain and decided to see a doctor (an obstetrician).

She was asked to go for an ultrasound scan, and that was when she found out she was pregnant with twins.

But there was a problem.

One of the pregnancies was in the fallopian tube (which is the wrong place for a pregnancy), while the other one was in the uterus, also called the womb (the correct place for pregnancy).

Medically, a pregnancy in the fallopian tube is what we call an ectopic pregnancy. But because there was another pregnancy inside the uterus at the same time, the condition is called a heterotopic pregnancy.

What happened next would blow your mind.

The doctors had to surgically remove the pregnancy in the fallopian tube to avoid complications and leave the one in the uterus. She was then asked to return for check up the following week.

When she came back and had another ultrasound scan, she found out that the pregnancy in the uterus had split into identical twins, which completely took her off guard.

This most likely happened because she was still in the early stage of pregnancy. She could have ended up pregnant with triplets or even more.

She was not prepared for the pregnancy, but thankfully she and her husband eventually found their way around it.
