New phone, who dis?

Hey 👋 I'm Forest!

I'm a 4th(6th) year student at Carleton, studying game development. I was an executive of the CCSS for several years, and now I focus on running larger events, like game jams, CTF competitions, and meetups. I do a lot of open source work, and I want to take lots of what I've learned to help improve parts of computer science at Carleton!

What is this hackathon?

This is a hackathon that will be hosted online on Discord. The point of it is to create content that helps students learn outside of courses at Carleton. It will include resource handbooks, concept visualizations, explorable explanations, practice material, and lots more. The hackathon will focus on the first year courses: 1405, 1406, and 1805. The material will also be helpful for students in 1005 and 1006.

The hackathon will take place on May 1st-2nd. Participants of the hackathon will work on teams to prototype and experiment in several different projects. These projects will focus on conventional learning items, as well as more exploratory methods. If you're interested, scroll down to the bottom of this page to find the registration.

The previous hackathon

A previous (smaller) iteration of this was run 2 years ago. Several students got together to try and improve some of the course content for COMP 2804. The group was made up of 2 TAs, several frontend devs, and several backend devs. Overall, most of the work that was done was experimental and exploratory, and not all of it continued on. However, three of the students went on to make the Discrete Math website:

Why would you want to participate?

There are no winners, it's not a competition, and we're all working together. This isn't for grades, and you aren't getting paid. Further, everything that is created during this hackathon will be open sourced under the MIT License.

That being said, a large goal of this hackathon is to provide some awesome experience over a short period of time. You'll also be creating a legacy that you can leave behind for future students. You'll work with lots of modern technologies and mindsets. You'll be exposed to new ideas, and be mentored by some experienced students.

If this isn't enough of a reason for you to participate, no worries! The open-source mindset isn't for everyone. If you just need some extra convincing, check out my recent post in the CCSS magazine:
