Process Notes

At Muse Games, I was a member of the game design team tasked with all writing and narrative requirements in addition to game and level design.

As our needs grew during the development of Guns of Icarus Online, I expanded my role to develop and run our community management operations and handle player communications.

Worldbuilding

I developed the world and setting of the game, building the backstory from the beginnings mentioned in the game’s precursor, Flight of the Icarus. I designed the game’s six player factions and wrote all lore and narrative content, some of which was published on the game’s website and in the newsletter.

The game’s original map encompassed the region known as the Burren. Using the original map as a core, I expanded around it to create the world map below, stitching together satellite images to form the terrain and then layering new towns, factions, and trade routes on top.

Writing

Below are three issues of the Broadside Anchor, an in-world community newspaper I designed, wrote, and produced for the Guns of Icarus Online website.

The Broadside Anchor served multiple goals: it revealed lore about the world, providing narrative context for battle arenas and seeding story threads; it taught and reinforced tips about gameplay mechanics and strategies, such as the Phoenix Claw captain’s tool or the technique of hiding in clouds to evade enemies; and it acknowledged player narratives, reporting on unfolding stories and incorporating quotes and images contributed by community members.
