Hi Oliver,
In Preferences, there is a tab for Dates. The default is 50 for "about", "before" and "after". The number set in the Date tab "define" what "about", "before", and "after" mean.
https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Gramps_5.0_Wiki_Manual_-_Settings#Dates
If a Birth is "about 1900" based upon the 50, the birth could have occurred anywhere between 1850 and 1950. "before 1900" could have occurred anywhere between 1850 and 1900. "after 1900" could have occurred anywhere between 1900 and 1950
So, if your filter is looking for births between 1850 and 1880, "before 1900" or "before 1900" will both return as possible dates meeting your filter.
These date settings will also affect age calculations and interesting results will display if the birth is not a definitive date and another life event also has a qualifier.
You can obviously change these Date settings but cannot set them to "0". "1' is the lowest possible setting. For myself, I gave each a 10 year range. I set the "about" to 5 and "before" and "after" to 10
