Hey everyone, after being selected for GSoC 2020, there's a great summer full of open source development. This is the seventh weekly check-in and we're into the coding period. Here's what I've been up to this week

This week is awesome. I'm finally working with openedx now and am parallel doing some other tasks. I'm quite excited about what it has to offer and what are the things that we can move forward with now.

What I'm up to this week ?

This week I'm up to documenting openedx and will probably work on the youtube integration on TED. We also have plans to do image optimization in scraperlib but that means experimenting first with different types of images, and document best ways to approach this. In my initial findings with openedx, I've found out that the scraper takes quite long to scrape a course because it also scrapes all the forums associated with it and maybe we can make this optional.

My gut feeling went halfway right. Sotoki run for electronics passed, but, the blender one got stuck.

As of now, we have gutenberg S3 support ready and it is running in zimfarm after a test run succeeded. We also have better image resizing in scraperlib and have some tests fixed. For sotoki, the electronics run passed but the blender run has some errors (though the frequency came down to some twenties from half a thousand now) and still gets stuck. Hopefully I'll find the root cause and fix this soon.

What's ahead now?

I've started a deep dive into openedx and hopefully, we'll make this scraper great and will have zimfarm support for the same in the coming days. I also look forward to our discussion on youtube videos in TED coming to a conclusion and we working on it to get it done. Also, we have some concerns with the S3 speeds and would try to come up with ways to make it faster.

Challenges I faced

This week had some small challenges. We had to update youtube to have support foe WebP images and we did that in the scraperlib. Also, the biggest challenge this week is to know the root cause of blender.stackexchange.com run failing on zimfarm.

Verdict

I am enjoying this week very very much given that we have completed many pending tasks and have started on a completely new thing. I say this every time but I can't stop describing how awesome GSoC is. It gives you exposure and makes you meet awesome people and even work with them. I really love this kind of stuff.
