Hey everyone, after being selected for GSoC 2020, there's a great summer full of open source development. This is the fourth weekly check-in and we're starting the coding period. Here I've briefed things I'm up to this week

As the title suggests, It starts with one ... June (I know you all guessed that famous Linkin Park song ; I'm a huge fan myself). Yup! By the time you read this, it's here; the coding period of Google Summer of Code 2020. It's a time of great excitement and it's time I start giving greater amounts of efforts into this program.

What I'm up to this week ?

This week is mostly focused on things that were created or changed recently. We are up to refactoring ted scraper in every way possible, adding extra scripts in ted and youtube for multiple zims per topic/playlist. Also, since Gutenberg is a bit old and a bit complex, we're working to get S3 support into it. We also have encountered a bug in Sotoki which we want to fix and lastly, work on the ZIm Farm.

I wanna thank my mentors and everyone who supported. Let's officially start the Coding Period for Google Summer of Code 2020.

We were also able to refactor ted, add the script for youtube and the ted script is on the way. We have analyzed the gutenberg thing and are working to find the best possible way for S3 support. Also, we're trying to fix sotoki as of now.

What's ahead now?

The coding period of GSoC 2020 would start with new release of ted with zimfarm support and hopefully we'll meet all our weekly goals. Although the sotoki bug seems quite strange, I think we would be able to solve it in coming days. We would also work on fixing some zimfarm stuff and hence the overall issue count on openzim would most likely decrease in recent future.

Challenges I faced

This week had a huge bummer regarding TED videos being hosted on YouTube and it being a necessity to handle throttling of both TED and YouTube servers. However, It is a huge learning opportunity for us. Also, this week I got quite ill for 1 day and it made it a challenge but I successfully made up for the lost hours of work.

Verdict

It's 12 midnight in India. So, not taking much time, I would say - This is the most enjoyable experience for me and has made me learn a lot. GSoC is fun. And it's cool.
