Developers and projects in the Chinese-speaking world are the focus of a new featured round with $25,000 matching grants on the 18th cycle of the Gitcoin Grants created to increase participation of people from the region in contributing to blockchain public goods.

The round named Global Chinese Community for Public Good is a campaign by the Universal Digital Commons of the Global Chinese Community to incentivize creators, attract participation from builders and bring more funds into the sector for the benefit of people in the Chinese-speaking world.

Featured rounds are managed by external managers and not Gitcoin although funds are distributed using quadratic funding where matching funds are allocated to projects based on support and donations raised from the community.

“Within the Chinese-speaking domain, owing to historical and contemporary factors, our comprehension of “public goods” and our experience in constructing and overseeing them fall somewhat short compared to English-speaking counterparts,” Global Chinese Community (GCC), the managers of the featured round noted.

For projects to qualify for the Global Chinese Community  featured round, they must support or directly advance the Global Chinese Community blockchain ecosystem  and at least one founder or team member uses Chinese as daily language.

Organisers said projects that focus on Ethereum, decentralised science, security and anti-fraud, education and policy advocacy and decentralised public governance could apply. Organisers further stated that application and donation phase was synchronised due to the delay in the commencement of the feature round. Application which began on August 8 would end on August 29 while donations will run from August 15th to 29th.

“...We are enthusiastic about involving more Chinese-speaking builders in contributing to the broader Ethereum community and lending their expertise,” GCC said.

On education and policy advocacy, GCC said it anticipates education about cryptographic technology would encourage greater participation of Chinese-speaking builders in global blockchain community.

“We aspire to witness the growth of more mature policy advocacy organizations within the Chinese-speaking realm, promoting the evolution of crypto-friendly policies,” it stated.
