I've spent the the last 5 years working from exclusively from home, here are some pro tips from a serious workaholic.
Don't Panic!
- Working from home means you are likely more productive not less productive even after factoring in the distraction of kids and partners also working from home. On average you are likely to work 3-4 hours more per day.
- So don't worry about disruptions, noise, etc. You are doing just fine!
Maintain a Routine
- Set your alarm and wake up at the same time each weekday
- Maintain your same morning routine you normally would, shower, breakfast, etc.
- Get dressed like you are going to work, but stay comfortable
- Start your workday at the same time every weekday
- Avoid starting your day any earlier than you normally do
- Enjoy your weekends! Don't work
Set expectations with your family
- Let your family know what your day looks ahead of time
- Let your family know when your calls are. We worry about background noise, but calls are also loud and disruptive to everyone else too
Have a dedicated workspace
- If you don't have a dedicated home office, carve out a space to work
- Let your family know where your workspace is, so they know when you are working and when you aren't
