Demonstrate an understanding of:

• assessing the situation
• making the area safe
• comforting and reassuring the casualty
• the primary survey of a casualty - using DRABC
• the secondary survey of a casualty
• using the mnemonic ‘AMPLE’ when assessing a casualty
• how to arrange for help
• the importance of keeping notes, where possible.

A minimum stock of first aid items might include:

• a leaflet giving general guidance on first aid
• individually wrapped, sterile plasters (assorted sizes), appropriate to the type of work (hypoallergenic plasters can be provided if necessary)
• sterile eye pads
• individually wrapped, triangular bandages (preferably sterile)
• safety pins
