Learn about the forgotten financial feminists in HERstory.
What we cover:
- Influential women in finance through the ages (sneak peek below!)(00:00-10:55)
- The history of women & credit (10:55-27:30)
- How women can disrupt inequitable financial systems (27:30-34:31)
- Maggie L. Walker (born 1864): An African-American woman who opened St. Luke’s Penny Savings Bank in Richmond, Virginia. She was keenly aware of the financial bias against her race and organized a majority-female board. She headed the bank until her death in 1934, having by then successfully merged with two black-owned banks and guided St. Luke's carefully through the Depression.
- Brenda Runyon (born 1868): Founder of the First Women’s Bank in Clarksville, Tennessee. Its staff and board were all women!
- Judy H. Mello (born 1943): President and Chief Executive of the First Women’s Bank in Manhattan. Though the Equal Credit Opportunity Act had been passed a year prior, she still believed there was work to be done to level access to credit for women entrepreneurs.
