Enterprise-scale design system architecture supporting a national bank's digital product surface, internal operations, and brand activation across millions of customer interactions.

🏦 Client: Fifth Third Bank · Role: Senior Graphic Designer (Contract · Collabera) · Scope: Digital Icon Architecture, Design System, Brand Application & Merchandise · Year: 2023–2024

Overview

Contributed a governed icon system to Fifth Third Bank's evolving enterprise brand — building out the icon library that powers the bank's digital product surface across consumer, commercial, and preferred banking segments as part of a larger, established brand direction.

The system extended from functional UI components into internal brand activation — establishing consistent visual logic across digital interfaces, enterprise merchandise, and physical brand touchpoints under a single governed framework.

Challenge

Fifth Third required design system depth capable of operating at national bank scale — with enough structural precision to support mobile product interfaces used by millions of customers, while also governing internal brand application across events, merchandise, and communication environments.

Existing assets lacked the component logic, naming architecture, and modularity required to maintain consistency across teams, vendors, and deployment surfaces without drift.

Solution

Engineered a full transactional icon system across three functional categories — Transaction, Reserved, and Special Considerations — covering 40+ distinct banking behaviors with consistent visual logic, scalable naming conventions, and clear governance documentation. Extended brand pattern and color architecture into enterprise merchandise, producing multi-variant apparel and cap systems for internal activation. Built fabrication-ready specifications enabling direct vendor handoff across print, embroidery, and physical production. Established visual governance standards ensuring component consistency across digital product, print, and physical brand environments without requiring design intervention at every touchpoint.

Impact

Delivered a 40+ icon system across three governed categories supporting Fifth Third's consumer and commercial digital banking interfaces. Enabled consistent brand application across internal events and enterprise merchandise without ongoing design overhead. Sustained across a nearly two-year engagement (2023–2024), with documented component logic and governed naming conventions that reduced cross-team production ambiguity.
