The Takeaway

We asked our students to rate many dimensions of their LCMC course experience, including how it compared to other courses they’ve taken and whether they would recommend it to other students. On a scale of 1-7, where 1 was “Far worse”, 4 was “The same” and 7 was “Far better”, we learned the following

<aside> 💡 Asked how likely they would be to recommend the course to other students, the median answer was a 7 out of 10. The most common answer, by far, was a 10 out of 10 (21% of students)

These results are a positive sign of not just the quality of the courses themselves but of the quality of the professors and the environment they create as well.

Measurable Improvements

We’ve taken meaningful steps forward as a result of the feedback received from students in the Spring 2021 surveys, and we continue to listen to students to better understand what can be improved in order to best address the areas they appreciate.

An easier-to-use LMS and videoconferencing solution Improved our onboarding module, standardized across all Rize courses, complete with video tutorials and additional online resources.
More manageable workloads in the first few weeks Introduced standardize “onboarding assignments” for all Rize courses in Week 1, to ensure a manageable on-ramp for students. Additionally, we revised Weeks 2-3 in all courses to ensure high-value assignments were not unnecessarily front-loaded in the semester.
Live class options for all courses More courses were moved from fully-asynchronous to the “optional-synchronous” format, where students are able to attend live classes.
More predictable grading Standardized rubric levels were introduced across course rubrics, and use of rubrics increased.
More opportunities to interact with students from other colleges Greater use of discussion forums and lesson plans using breakout room functionality were introduced across courses.
Improved professor responsiveness Instated a 48 hour responsiveness standard for all instructors, weekly student success review, where the Rize student experience team reviews grading turnaround, grades, and satisfaction in all courses.
