We present "Factory" in quotes, as it is not the ideal term to describe these farms, though it is the most well-known. We concern ourselves solely with farms raising animals (which can be safely assumed to be Chicken, Hog, or Cattle), not row crops.
What are the attributes of factory farms?
- Unsustainable lineages - Particularly for chicken, factory farms generally raise large numbers of hybrid animals, which cannot or do not reproduce. A smaller number of farms maintain breeding populations.
- Poor living conditions - we defer discussion of conditions
- "Rush" feeding - animals are bred and fed to encourage the fastest possible growth to market size
