Support the PoC development of a ZKP component for a Digital Identity Wallet
- A modular component that takes sd-jwt or any Verifiable credential (VC) and wrap it in a proof. The idea is that it is a modular component than can be easily integrated be reused in other digital wallets
Suggest and evaluate possible VC formats for Issuers and L2s for DID deployment
This solution aims to be compatible with EUDI Framework and simultaneously hopes to demonstrate a future-proof PQ path forward for the EU over BBS#
A successful use case and PoC will drive momentum for ZKP standards work

Background

European Union

EU Member States are working towards the development of a Toolbox including a technical Architecture and Reference Framework (ARF), a set of common standards and technical specifications that will determine the European Digital Identity framework in the future.

There are recent and active calls for cryptographer’s feedback on use of ZKPs in the framework, in particular as an alternative to the currently proposed by Orange, BBS+/BBS# and the selection of SD-JWT as a Verifiable Credential (VC) format.

Problem Statement

The zkID team has been working closely with the specifications and discussions based on the EUDI framework. In meetings and early research exploration the main issues identified are the following:

ZKPS

The global lack of a robust SSI solution that meets the demands of nation-states
General lack of understanding around ZKP systems in production
Lack of standardization of Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) protocols. ZKPS is the only way to provide the security properties most countries’ digital wallet project requirements.
There is hesitation among policymakers to adopt technology that is not internationally standardized
