Every day our body sheds millions of dead cells which forms the uppermost layer of our skin. These dead cells can clog the pores, makes our skin uneven, white pores are converted in black pores, acne break outs etc. It is important to scrub of these dead cells and Exfoliation is the process through which you remove the dead cells from the body !

There are two types of Exfoliation –

  1. Physical / Mechanical Exfoliation
  2. Chemical Exfoliation

Physical Exfoliation – Physical exfoliation in lay man terms means scrubbing. Physical or manual exfoliation works on the upper layers of the skin. Brushes, Loofahs, Scrubs are used for physical exfoliation

Chemical Exfoliation – As the name suggests, are chemicals called Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAS)

These chemicals are not chemical chemical per say like these days the word “Chemical”has been used. These acids have their origins from natural sources like Fruits.

AHAs and BHAs work in different ways to exfoliate the top layer of skin .

– BHAs break down the bonds between cells. The only known BHA is the Salicylic Acid

– AHAs cause the cells themselves to detach.

There are around 6 types of AHAs found in nature – Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Mandelic Acid, Malic Acid and Tartaric Acid. Each of these acids have their own attributes and functions.

You can use the AHAs and BHA’s in your Products directly ( as available in powder form from the market) or you can in corporate them naturally in your formulations.

For more knowledge about these Exfoliation types, how to incorporate them naturally  and recipes you can get my Exfoliation Bible.
