Des Moines, IA
[Des Moines Register reporter Katie Akin] notes the approach of officers from her side of the lawn. She repeatedly yells, “I’m with the press. I’m with the Des Moines Register” as she and fellow reporter Shelby Fleig walk away. The officers continue to come toward them, the reporters keep retreating, and Akin repeats “I’m press” or “I’m with the Des Moines Register” 17 times in about 30 seconds. She also repeats “I’m going"…
An officer runs a few steps toward her with his arm raised and pepper-sprays her in the face…Put simply, Akin was attacked. She was physically separated from the protesters, clearly and repeatedly identified herself as press and was walking away. There was no reason for her to be pepper-sprayed.
