Bitcoins ecological Footprint

The Bitcoin Network consumes large amount of energy everyday. If you are interested in how much excatly visit CO2 Comparisons

⚡️ Coal is used to generate Electricity

⚡️ old powerplants put back to service (Greendige Generation)

⚡️ Mining difficulty and computing power steadily increasing

Can such a high consumption be ecological?

That depends mostly on the source of the energy. Up to 65% percent of all Bitcoins used to be produced in China until they started regulation and banning in 2019. China is responsible for 28 percent of the world's CO2 emissions (see chart) (Standaert, March 24, 2021). This is mainly because more than 2/3 of the electricity comes from coal-fired power plants. These plants emit a lot of environmentally harmful CO2.
