EVFA invites documentary filmmakers to apply for the 2025 Research Grant, supporting early-stage nonfiction projects that explore ethical systems and the stories that shape how we live, eat, and relate to the planet and non-human life.
This grant supports filmmakers in the earliest creative stage — before development or production — when deep research, access, and story exploration define what a film can become.
Selected filmmakers will receive $8,000 USD to support activities such as story and character research, access building, feasibility studies, core prep materials and (optional) early test shoots. Each grantee will also be paired with a mentor and take part in two targeted sessions focused on advancing the research and strengthening the project’s foundation.
The goal: a clearly defined, well-researched concept with strong story potential and evidence of mainstream appeal — ready for the next stage of development or funding.
