ENGL 6100 surveys the writings of the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Frequently regarded as “the father of the English language,” Chaucer is instrumental to our understandings of the evolutions and transformations of not only the English language, but also English literature. In addition to reading Chaucer’s masterpiece—The Canterbury Tales—we will examine his poetry and prose and scholarship on Chaucer to gain a well-rounded understanding of Chaucer’s impact on English language and literature.
