Parking in San Francisco

As of early 2022, car break-ins have continued to increase in San Francisco.

The car break-ins are occurring so frequently, that civilians have practically given up on defending vehicles from burglaries. Police in San Francisco do not pursue car break-ins as they are considered misdemeanours.

If one has the luxury of choosing a car to park in SF (ex. when driving with friends), the following factors can be used:

• Avoid luxury/high-priced cars
• Avoid cars that conceal the interior (tinted windows)
• Avoid cars that have out-of-state license plates (more likely targeted as tourists)

The following can be considered when parking in SF:

• DO NOT leave any items in plain sight
  • Includes common car items such as dash cameras, water bottles, etc.
• Stay away from areas with high car break-in rates:
  • Nob Hills, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown
  • Check to see if there’s shattered glass on the ground
• Some people try tactics where they leave their cars unlocked, or they have written signs indicating that nothing can be stolen; this is not advised as there is no proof that this method is successful
