Session overview

Sam asked for a single top-level spreadsheet index covering every file at every depth in the Downloads folder, with each file's creation date, so he can spot move and consolidate opportunities.

What was done

Built a 4-sheet Excel workbook, Downloads Folder Index 2026-05-20.xlsx, saved to the Downloads root at /Users/samaguiar/Downloads/Downloads Folder Index 2026-05-20.xlsx.

Scan covered 5,839 files across 56 top-level folders plus 3 root-loose files. Total footprint 21.6 GB. All 5,839 rows carry a real creation date.

Sheets:

• Overview: snapshot totals, files-by-type breakdown, how-to notes.
• Folder Summary: one row per top-level folder, sorted by file count descending, with file count, total size, subfolder count, earliest created, newest created, newest modified.
• File Index: every file with top-level folder, subfolder path, name, extension, file category, size in bytes and readable, date created, date modified, folder depth, duplicate-name flag, full relative path. Duplicate rows shaded.
• Duplicate Names: 2,114 files whose name appears in 2 or more locations, grouped into 537 name groups, worst offenders first. Primary consolidation aid.

Method and technical notes

The Linux mount the sandbox sees strips birth time (stat %W returns 0). To get true creation dates, ran BSD stat -f on the Mac directly through Desktop Commander, wrote results to a scratch file, joined in Python, built the workbook with openpyxl.

What did not work

LibreOffice formula recalc (the xlsx skill's recalc.py) failed because the sandbox root filesystem /sessions was 100 percent full (the mounted Downloads folder counts against it), so LibreOffice could not create its macro config dir. Workaround: dropped all formulas and wrote the Overview and Folder Summary aggregates as computed static values. That is the right call for a dated snapshot anyway, and it displays correctly in any viewer. Workbook has zero formulas and zero formula errors.

Key findings for consolidation

• 2,114 duplicate-named files is the biggest consolidation signal. See the Duplicate Names sheet.
• Heaviest folders by count: Images (792), Website (773), _to_delete_2026-05-19 (683), Archives (505 files, 1.6 GB), Case - Legal Clients (376).
• _to_delete_2026-05-19 still holds 683 files and 105 MB, never emptied.
• 56 top-level folders is a lot. Around 20 look like one-off project scratch dirs (aguiar-landing, toc-design, critique, handoff, landing-page, on the road, routines-build, and similar) that could fold into the documented Downloads categories in CLAUDE.md.
