We think VC is all about returns, but sometimes it’s about the learnings |

Nut graf (the story in a nutshell) |
There’s an opportunity to make money investing in African tech. But it will humble you before it rewards you. |
. |
|
Structure (framework for the story) |
1) Introducing how technology is impacting traditional industries across Africa, and how venture capital has emerged to invest in African startups. |
- Even the biggest names in traditional investing are now leaning in. But tech in Africa is different, even for those who’ve invested in traditional companies and got crazy returns. Scarce exits, numerous shutdowns, and different operating models than what they know. .. 3) For a ‘new’ investor looking into tech, is there a different way to do VC in Africa? What should you expect about your first fund? ..
- Into Laurent’s story running Technology at IBL → How he was seeing tech pop up and saw synergy with companies like these.
-
But instead of raising a fund and going for it, he decided to do a few things differently
-
Team up with the best VCs out there and work together on sourcing deals and deploying capital
- How DotExe is doing VC differently. (Not using their ties with IBL to get a pass, being a passenger first before being a driver, and not overpromising.) It’s okay not to know it all. ..
- Highlight some of the companies DotExe has invested in, and their synergy with IBL/how they have collaborated together. (How they’re working with LETA)
Question- Humility and VC don’t go well together, but could this be a more refreshing approach to VC in Africa? ..
7) Call to action here for founders.

Laurent’s comments :
- Introducing how technology is impacting traditional industries across Africa, and how venture capital has emerged to invest in African startups. A bit here about Corporate Venture Capital. (Which we are not)
- Into Laurent’s story running Technology at IBL → How he was seeing tech pop up and saw synergy with companies like these. how impactful and disruptive they could be for a giant conglomerate like IBL
- Managed to sell the idea to IBL to start investing, slowly but surely, with humility, in tech startups in Africa - But and instead of raising a fund and going for it, he decided to do a few things differently
- Team up with the best and most like-minded Fund Managers * VCs out there and work together on *co-creating and co-managing a mauritius -domiciled fund, sourcing & analysing deals together and deploying capital.
- The idea was to be a co-pilot, sitting next to the driver and learn how to drive, and drive sometime ! Also did a Certificate in Business Excellence in VC/PE at Columbia Business School and joined the Obuntu Fellowship
- Look for companies that have synergy with IBL → One of Africa’s largest companies Build track record slowly but surely and integrating the VC Ecosystem
- Idea was to invest for Financial results and help daring Founders grow, and potential synergy with the IBL Group is of course a bonus.
- Highlight some of the companies DotExe has invested in, and their synergy with IBL/how they have collaborated together.
- Call to action here for founders.
