Granola Bars & Packet Snacks

Can I eat granola bars on the Mediterranean Diet? Lots of people will say no, there’s been debate on sugars and content in granola bars, I’m going to say I’m disabled and a granola bar is a quick easy snack that is better than a lot of the other things I could be swallowing and not to be a purist aha ha ha. Obviously, remember you can have wholegrain crackers, so there are options out there. The Mediterranean Diet is all about wholegrains, nuts, fruits and good ingredients. Let’s check what’s in them and find some granola bar options here in the UK. Please note, I would limit a granola bar to maximum one per day, and I am not suggesting any bar from these brands, I am suggesting using these bars as of early 2025.

The bars I keep in for emergencies here in the UK are Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars and I also have some Belvita Milk & Cereal Biscuit Packs.

The Nature Valley Oats and Nature Valley Crunchy Bar options are both bars that I personally would use as a snack. They are oat and wholegrain based, and the general consensus from working people on the Med Diet is that these are an option.

Homepage | KIND Snacks

The KIND Dark Chocolate Protein Bars are one that people short on time suggest for use on the Med Diet. Note that not all the KIND bars get this endorsement, their recent cake bars are way too high in sugar. Check ingredients, but the Protein Bars seem to be popular for an easy to carry snack.

Oat Biscuits

Nairn’s Oat Biscuits are a classic, rightly so. Also good for the old Hummus Dipping. And lots of other uses now I come to think about it. Probably have them in the cupboard for emergencies.

Roasted CHICKPEAS Classic Lightly Salted

Little bit out there this one, but… another take on hummus, anyone? Lots of companies have started bringing out new options. Prawn Crackers instead of crisps (I have no idea what fat is in those, don’t just eat them), flavoured rice cakes, and now roasted chickpeas. I hear good things about this final option.

Green Smoothies

Use green smoothies to top up veggies while keeping sugars low. I found that eating a small meal (the 200kcal every 4 hours) was great for keeping migraines down. I wanted to keep the regular small meals up and not move to large meals with long breaks between. Smoothies can fill the gap that easy powder shakes filled on the liquid diet. Tips: use frozen spinach as the green option, or avocado, as beginner options. Used chopped frozen ginger for added kick. The smoothie is best with three sections: bulk (avocado/banana), flavour/greens, toppings/spices.

Disabilities sometimes come with the need to add vitamin supplements to a medication structure. How about adding supplements to your smoothie? 1 tsp of Biocare Multi NutriPowder would mix in easily, provide many daily nutrients, and is a popular brand for exactly this use.
