Design systems -- a library of reusable design elements -- can help increase design speed, visual consistency, and development velocity. But what should they include? And how should you go about creating them?

Overview

Design System Defined

A design system is a standard toolkit for design and development of marketing assets.

Sometimes a design system is focused exclusively on digital products or a website. It could include a library of elements, components, design patterns, and templates which can be reused and remixed to quickly concept experiences.

Other times, a design system could expand beyond digital products, including any marketing materials, from digital banner ads, email templates, and social posts to traditional business cards, flyers, and direct mail pieces.

This resource is focused on design systems for digital products, but the thinking can easily extend to a broader design system.
