context

Created in 2011, Descomplica is the largest platform of distance learning in Brazil being a reference when it comes to preparing Brazilian students for ENEM, an exam that allows them to get into college.

With a large number of live and recorded classes and being well stablished on those segments, in 2018 the startup began to spend some efforts to complete students learning journey. And one of the biggest challenges back then was about the experience of doing lessons. On the same year, Descomplica acquired an startup called PaperX to help building this experience.

business strategy

When acquiring PaperX, Descomplica splited it into two squads with two different goals: one was to create a digital experience based on traditional lessons, once we had any, and the other was to explore different ways to test students learning.

challenge

By the end of 2018, in the middle of these definitions, I was invited to be the product designer of the squad whose mission was to explore different ways to get students knowledge tested. At the time, the team was already developing a solution based on lives. They have launched an MVP where people answered questions about different topics and would win a prize if they got it all right. But it didn't get so far since it did not match Descomplica's strategy.

At that moment, we knew little about our students to make sure we were going in a way that was reducing our risks, especially when it comes to value risk.
