Ludwig van Beethoven died it is said, clenching his fist and raising it toward the sky, cursing. He died as dramatically as he lived. He died in a stormy night, lightning and rain and thunder. Clenching his fist. Did he lead a good life? Did he lead a Stoked life?

Beethoven lived a life of profound contradictions. He suffered deeply—most notably from deafness and loneliness—yet he achieved unparalleled artistic heights and left an immense cultural legacy. By objective measures of creative accomplishment and influence, his life was exceptional and “good” in the sense of significance and contribution. By measures of personal wellbeing and happiness, it was often tragic. Ultimately, Beethoven’s life exemplifies how greatness and suffering can coexist: a life that may not have been easy or emotionally fulfilled, but was unmistakably consequential and inspiring.
