While I was conducting some research for my IXD501 module, myself and my peers were sent a link to a really interesting interview of David Bowie giving a very accurate and quite scary prediction of what the modern use of internet would look like. To predict this at a time when the internet was just taking off, is unbelievable.

Whilst watching the interview, I recorded the important details Bowie said and compared it to the internet in the present day. When asked what he would be if not a musician, he believed that he would be a fan and collector of music. He thought that singing is rebellious, subversive and could affect change. He stated that the internet would “carry the flag” of being subversive and rebellious, like music did the previous decades before that, an example would be punk rock and what it signifies.

“Music is more about the audience” he believed. It is now a conveyer of information in the 90’s and no longer a conveyer of rebellion, as the internet has taken this job. He goes on to state, that people in that time hasn’t even “seen the tip of the iceberg. The potential, good and bad to society is going to be unimaginable”. He predicted that the state of content would be changed by the internet, which is very accurate in many cases. From the interview he was very passionate about the internet, as he wanted to start his own internet company.

Overall, this was a fantastic and very intriguing interview. I have never seen an interview that has accurately described the future of the internet quite like this one. We can all learn from Bowie in this instance, to be mindful of the future and our products, as well as what the future holds for them. What will be our next groundbreaking ubiquitous phenomenon?
