Damage Types
There are only 3 fundamental types of damage in the game:
- Ranged damage
- Melee damage (and melee-induced DoT ticks, though the ticks themselves can neither crit nor hit weakspots, i.e. Smolder burn or Razorstone bleed)
- Mod damage (and mod-induced DoT ticks, though the ticks themselves can neither crit nor hit weakspots, i.e. Devastator's Skewer bleed) - this now includes summons
Gear damage bonus wording
Most pieces of gear directly name the types of damage their bonuses apply to, but there is one formulation that isn't immediately apparent:
- "Total Damage" means it's a multiplicative bonus, which mostly applies to armor damage bonuses. It is not always immediately apparent which damage types an armor applies to, though
- "All Damage" naturally applies to all 4 damage types (I.e. Ring Of The Admiral), although that is somewhat inconsistent as far as summon damage is concerned. It seems most pieces of gear that increase it explicitly say so.
Damage Formula
The Game uses a similar system to many other games (i.e. Borderlands) that let you buff a variety of damage related stats, in that the full damage formula consists of several multipliers within which bonuses stack additively unless the bonus is its own unique multiplier:
Damage dealt = Base damage x (General damage stack) x (Weakspot damage stack) x (Crit damage stack) x (Armor set damage) x (Corrosion damage increase) x (Hardspot penalty) x (Enemy elemental resist/weakness) x (specific multipliers)
What goes where
- All bonuses in the game are displayed as percentages, but for the purpose of calculation they are used in the form of decimals: +30% → +0.3
- Each bonus is only factored into the calculation of applicable damage types (for example Stone Of Balance's +0.15 ranged + melee dmg bonus won't be factored in when determining mod or summon damage)
- Each unique multiplier except the general damage one is only factored in when they actually apply (i.e. WS dmg stack only when hitting weakspots, corrosion stacks only when the enemy is actually under their influence)
