Whilst conducting some research for the group project, I wanted to see if there was any apps or websites that was similar to our idea and if so, could we use these as an influence. From the beginning we all said that Uber would be considered one of our influences because, we all liked the idea of the user being able to see their taxi on the Uber app, so it can give you an idea as to how far away your current taxi ride is.
We planned on interpreting and developing this idea in our app. Similar to the Uber app, the user in our project can see bin lorries/vans around the map as well as the other pins people have left on the app to indicate that waste needs disposed of in that location. This would result in creating satisfaction for the user, knowing that their needs are getting fulfilled and receiving a rough indication as to when they can expect the waste to be collected. See our wireframes and prototype for more info.
After looking at Uber as a starting place for our app, we knew that wasn’t going to be enough. I took the responsibility to find us another application we could develop further, which I was successful in. I came across the ClearWaste app:
The ClearWaste app makes it easy to report fly-tipping to the appropriate local authority anywhere in the UK and it helps consumers get rid of their rubbish using government licensed waste removal companies, safe in the knowledge that it won't be fly-tipped and for the best possible price. The app uses the latest in mapping technology to pinpoint and document the precise location of the waste and sends a report with photographs and details straight to the relevant council or registered landowner.
A fly-tipping report can be created with images and submitted in around 60 seconds. Alerts go straight to councils who can then clear up the rubbish. For people wanting to get rid of rubbish the app also has a unique price comparison tool for consumers to find and use legitimate and licensed waste removal companies, avoiding rogue traders who often fly-tip waste, leaving the householder open to fines or prosecution.
Whether you want rubbish taken away by man & van, skip or grab bag, the ClearWaste app compares prices and will get you the best price to get your rubbish removed and at a time that suits you, all protected by a £1,000 No Fly-Tip Guarantee.
From looking at this, it can be said that our app is very similar to ClearWaste. It too contains a map, the selection to photograph the area thats affected, with the option of selecting a van or lorry etc. However, one disadvantage of this app is that the user has to pay for the company to come out and collect the waste. Our app on the other hand, is free to use and the city council is responsible for lifting the litter. Nevertheless, it is a good app to develop from, as it gives us an idea as to how a waste collecting application looks like.
