Hydrogen Water: Extra Healthy or a Hoax?—A Systematic Review

Journal: International Journal of Molecular Sciences · 2024

A team of eight medical researchers reviewed 25 peer-reviewed clinical studies on hydrogen-rich water, covering its effects on exercise performance, cardiovascular health, liver function, mental health, anti-aging, and oxidative stress. Results across the board were encouraging — hydrogen-rich water showed antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and protective effects in the human body, with no reported side effects.

The Effects of 24-Week, High-Concentration Hydrogen-Rich Water on Body Composition, Blood Lipid Profiles and Inflammation Biomarkers in Men and Women with Metabolic Syndrome

Journal: Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity · 2020

n this 24-week randomized controlled trial, 60 adults with metabolic syndrome — a combination of high blood sugar, excess body fat, and abnormal cholesterol levels — consumed either high-concentration hydrogen-rich water or a placebo daily. The hydrogen-rich water group showed significant reductions in total cholesterol, blood glucose, and HbA1c (a key marker of long-term blood sugar control), along with measurable improvements in inflammation markers and a modest reduction in BMI and waist-to-hip ratio. Notably, this is one of the longest hydrogen-rich water trials conducted to date, and all participants completed it with no reported adverse effects.

The Effects of 8-Week Hydrogen-Rich Water Consumption on Appetite, Body Composition, Sleep Quality, and GLP-1 in Obese Men and Women (HYDRAPPET)

Journal: Medicina · 2025

In this randomized controlled trial, 35 adults with obesity drank either 1 litre of hydrogen-rich water or plain water daily for 8 weeks. Those in the hydrogen-rich water group experienced significantly reduced food cravings, lower total and LDL cholesterol levels, and better sleep quality compared to the placebo group — with no adverse effects reported. The study also found that hydrogen-rich water raised levels of GLP-1, a hormone that plays a key role in appetite control, suggesting it may support weight management as part of a healthy lifestyle.
