Keaton Milburn


The world we live in is impelled by the influences around us. Whether it be a parental figure, celebutante or simply someone who has made a significant impact on one’s life, every individual venerates their person of choice. This is not to say that every influencer fosters identical ethics, but rather develops a strategy to convey their creative revelations within the media. That being said, the influencer I chose to pursue may not be as established in the media in comparison to others, but does an exceptional job of rendering lifestyle tips and tricks that revolve around her everyday life as a college student like you and I.

Meet Keaton Milburn. The 22 year-old Arizona State Senior first established her media presence on Twitter in June of 2011 followed by the creation of her now distinguished YouTube channel when she was simply 13 years old in March of 2012, that has since earned her 480k subscribers. In addition to Twitter and YouTube, Keaton serves as a Digital Creator on Instagram’s platform with 179k followers and just recently launched a streetwear apparel line with a sorority sister called “twinflames”. As an influencer, Milburn devotes the majority of her days to creating and sharing a variety of lifestyle content such as her morning routine, everyday make-up tutorials and her online shopping hauls. Keaton created her YouTube Channel because of her strong passion for fashion and make-up, which has since expanded to the documentation of her excursions, fitness routines and life advice. There is no doubt that Keaton Milburn is adored by young female adults across the board who can directly relate to the substance of her posts, which speaks to the authentic, genuine persona she upholds and portrays in the media.I have decided to analyze the patterns of influencer content and what sets each individual influencer aside from one another, while remaining relevant and creative in the media.

Keaton’s YouTube videos are filmed by her, using a Nikon Camera, that depict real-life experiences she encounters on a day to day basis, which she then edits for hours, even days, in order to ensure that she is producing high-quality authentic content. As we all know, being enrolled as a full-time college student is extremely demanding, so it makes one wonder how she finds the time in her days to envision, brainstorm and produce content on a weekly basis alongside classes, homework and exams. Thankfully, with the help and support of her mother and professional manager, a lot of the stress of being a one man show is alleviated, as the two work to arrange contracts and schedule partnered sponsorships with brands that fit her way of life.

One of the greatest challenges an influencer can face is backlash from viewers within the media. Despite being Arizona State University’s “It Girl”, Keaton Milburn faces negativity among her many subscribers which is an inevitable occurrence for bloggers and digital creators. Milburn keeps her composure by not allowing pessimism to affect her on a personal level and hinder her from doing what she loves, which is a characteristic all media influencers must embody in order to refrain from falling through the cracks. Colleagues at ASU and her supportive fan base aid in combating negative energy from critics to allow Milburn to be the best that she can possibly be. Being a YouTube Star does not obstruct Keaton from maintaining close friendships, being that the majority of the friends she has made since starting college had not the slightest clue how influential and popular she was on social media platforms. Her friends admire her loyalty and how down to earth she is for being so well known on the web.

There are many stereotypes of media influencers that circulate society, one of which being that influencers only generate content for attention. Nine times out of ten, a media influencer genuinely enjoys what he or she does and does so with desire and passion. Consumers who despise media influencers have the ability to be ruthless in their impressions of an influencer’s character, motives and reasoning for producing content. Individuals who hold this point of view tend to interpret an influencer’s message quite differently than it is intended to be perceived. In Keaton’s case, dissatisfied viewers tend to think she is a glorified, spoiled young adult who gets anything and everything handed to her. This defeats the purpose of the YouTube empire she built that imparts her keen fashion recommendations as well as lifestyle tips that educate viewers using tutorials, relaying advice for struggling individuals and how to succeed through a positive outlook. Never has Milburn once addressed an extremely controversial topic that would upset viewers, thus having them turn against her. She omits foul language, crude behavior and sensitive topics out of respect for the diversity of subscribers who view her content.

What I enjoyed most about this assignment was that it allowed for an array of creative freedom where I had the ability to deliver my ideas in a cohesive and organized manner to my liking. I believe that when assignments have too many regulations is when it becomes difficult to exhibit creativity. Additionally, having the opportunity to report on one of my favorite media influencers made the assignment very enjoyable and exciting, as I learned more about Keaton Milburn than I had thought I already knew.
