Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis
Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis (CNH) is a common, benign condition characterised by the development of a painful nodule on the ear. It is thought to result from factors such as persistent pressure on the ear (e.g. during sleep or from headsets), trauma, or exposure to cold. CNH is more common in men and with increasing age.
Management
- Pressure relief:
- This is the cornerstone of treatment.
- Foam 'ear protectors' or specially designed cushions may be used during sleep to reduce pressure on the affected area.
- Intralesional corticosteroid injection: May help reduce inflammation and pain in some patients.
- Collagen injection: Occasionally used to provide cushioning and reduce pressure at the site.
- Surgical excision: Considered in refractory cases; however, recurrence is common unless underlying pressure factors are addressed.
