Exploratory vs Explanatory analysis

When presenting, don't explore everything, just show the audience the noteworthy things that they need to see.

Who, what and how

• To whom am I communicating?
• What do I want my audience to know or do?
• How can Ouse data to help make my point?

Who

The audience

• Avoid general audiences (“internal and external stakeholders” or “anyone who might be interested”)
• The more specific the audience, the better

The presenter (myself)

• What's my relationship with the audience?
  • Do they know and trust me?
  • Or are we just meeting for the first time?

What

Action

• I should always want my audience to know or do something

  ⇒ consequently, I should be communicating what's relevant to make the audience know or do that thing

• The audience doesn't know better than the presenter. It's the opposite

  ⇒ I should help people understand and act

Mechanism

• Consider the control I have over the audience to decide which method should be used to communicate
