After the last bell rang at school, Jim headed to his locker, his head down with a blank face. But then Jim caught sight of Jake in the corner of his eye. Jim tried to leave the locker room and quickened his pace to avoid Jake. But Jake blocked his path with a smirk.
“Thought you could sneak away, huh?” he taunted, drawing their classmates’ attention. Jim felt uneasy. “Just. Just leave me alone, Jake,” he said, attempting to sound brave but still feeling trapped inside.
Jake's laughter faded into tense silence as he faced Jake, ready to stand his ground. Jake jumped at him and shoved Jim against the lockers. Jake tried to punch him. But Jim dodged it. Jake's eyes widened with a confused look, but so did Jim's.
Jake walked away, pale-faced and confused. As Jim walked home, he heard police sirens in the distance and noticed the sky darken ominously. He quickened his speed, but his heart dropped when he turned onto his street. Police cars surrounded his house, lights flashing, and a crowd had gathered.
Jim pushed through the crowd, fear gripping him. A police officer stopped him. "Do you live here?" he asked. Jim nodded, his voice barely a whisper. "What happened?" "You should come inside. It’s better if you see for yourself," the officer said softly.
He opened the door for Jim, and his world shattered. His parents were lying on the ground, covered in blood. The air around him seemed to thicken, his chest tightening as he struggled to breathe. The room closed in on Jim until he felt like he was stuck. He fell to his knees, crying out.
Suddenly, a thunderous roar shook the ground. Everyone ran from Jim's house as if it were infected. Jim looked out the window to see the sky turn a fiery red, the clouds a dark grey, and the air thick as bricks.
Something showed up in the sky, it was… An asteroid. Hurling down to the ground, fire surrounds it with its speed. It was coming faster and faster, the ground began to shake, and sirens, in the distance.
Then it happened, it crashed into the ground, shaking the whole island to its crash. "EVERYONE, THIS IS A LEVEL NINE LOCKDOWN! GO INTO YOUR HOUSES!" the police officer shouted. Jim, dazed and numb, stumbled outside.
Where the asteroid hit was a smoking crater, making more smoke than a campfire. In the middle of the asteroid, something glowed with a fiery light. Drawn to it, Jim approached the crater slowly. The closer he was to the asteroid, the more of a pull he felt towards it.
Amidst all the rubble was a glowing necklace lying inside the asteroid, burning with an otherworldly fire. The fire glowing in his eyes, he went and reached for it. Without a second thought, he reached out and touched it.
The pain and fear dwindled, replaced by a powerful force no one could explain. Jim began to float in the air, eyes glowing as fire and hair as hot magma. A surge went through his body, he fell to the ground. The power was too much for him.
Jim grunted with pain, trying to stand up. He looked at his hands with a grin. “Puny, humans. Always takes the shiny things.” He said, with a darker voice than usual. Jim grunted as if someone was kicking him from the inside.
“This human's soul is stronger than I thought.” Jim fell forward, but when he stood back up, it was like Jim was back. Behind Jim, he heard deep breathing. When he turned around, he saw… Jake.
Jake began slowly running from Jim, limping with every step. But he was too slow, Jim came running towards him, pushing him to the ground with immense force. Jake could barely breathe with Jim's hand gripping his neck.
“Don’t you dare go running from me,” Jim said with his normal voice, but still in his new body. “What’s happening to me? This puny human can’t take over my new body.” Jim said with his dark voice again.
