Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC)

Summary

Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) is a revolutionary new certification for food, fiber, and personal care ingredients. ROC farms and products meet the highest standards for soil health, animal welfare, and farmworker fairness. Taken from https://regenorganic.org/

Why is this relevant to Nangu

Organic is often not regenerative or even ecologically counterproductive. For example, a monocrop of hundreds of hectares of pineapple can be certified organic as long as they did "input substitution" from chemical to organic substances. That same mono crop could be guilty of the destruction of a virgin tropical forest and after a few decades the soil would be heavily degraded. It might be better than a conventional monocrop that uses neurotoxic pesticides that pollute the water, but it is absolutely unsustainable, far from regenerative yet still organic.

Fair Trade

Summary

Fairtrade certification is a product certification system where social, economic and environmental aspects of production are certified against Fairtrade Standards for Producers and Traders.

The Fairtrade system monitors the buying and the selling of the product until it is consumer packaged and labelled. Certificates are only issued after a physical inspection has confirmed that all relevant Fairtrade Standards have been complied with. Taken from https://www.flocert.net/

Why is this relevant to Nangu

Fairtrade is on of the most recognized labels around the world to ensure that no exploitation practices took place in the cultivation, processing and distribution of food products. It checks for both ecological and social aspects of food. This certification is not free from controversy as many believe it is not exhaustive enough, nonetheless we believe that in combination with the other certifications on this list the Fairtrade label positively contributes to Nangu's farming vision.

Biodynamic Demeter

Summary

Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition. Biodynamics is rooted in the work of philosopher and scientist Dr. Rudolf Steiner, whose 1924 lectures to farmers opened a new way to integrate scientific understanding with a recognition of spirit in nature. Biodynamics has continued to develop and evolve since the 1920s through the collaboration of many farmers and researchers. Around the world, biodynamics is alive in thousands of thriving gardens, farms, vineyards, ranches, and orchards. The principles and practices of biodynamics can be applied anywhere food is grown, with thoughtful adaptation to scale, landscape, climate, and culture. Why is this relevant to Nangu

Biodynamics is one of the first agricultural schools of thought to take the health of the soil as one of the core principles. It has a growing demand in the US and Europe and a relatively small community of farmers that are certified. Biodynamic products are often valued as high end food by a growing pool of loyal buyers. In short, it represents the values of Nangu and a good business opportunity.
