Background Overview

This project was undertaken as a part of the UX Design Certification course by Google.

The topic assigned was to Design a Digital Menu app for a Restaurant in Hyderabad. Since, no other clarification was present, I had to make certain decisions to scale down the scope of the problem. To understand the need for a Digital Menu App itself, I conducted this research with the aim of:

Finding the problems faced by Restaurant Users in India.

Exploring the Industry

I had realized that I was dealing with a huge industry, so some secondary research was imminent in order to proceed in the right direction. As I went on with my research I had no clue as to how would I find the problems in such a diverse industry. So after some dilemma, I decided to divide and conquer.

I chose to proceed with the Casual Dining Restaurants since they generate the highest revenue in India and they're available in almost every town and city. The user base for this category was also immense and these restaurants seemed to be in a constant attempt to try and balance the standard of service, the pricing of the food and the profits. They're right in between Fine Dining Restaurants, where the pricing and service are premium and the Casual Restaurants which are meant for quick and cheap service.

Challenges of the Restaurants..

This wasn't exactly necessary per se, but it was ideal to know the challenges faced by the restaurants as well in order to generate practical insights in this scenario. Casual Dining Restaurants don't have qualified staff to offer service to the users, like in Fine Dining Restaurants. Also, unlike the Fast Casual restaurants, the users in Casual Dining expect good service and etiquette from the staff.

Ideal Research Scenario

The best way going forward could have been observing the way users spend their time in restaurants- the way they choose their tables, look at the menu, order their food etc. But alas, COVID played its part as the disruptor and Field Research was not an option :(

So, I resorted to the next preferable research method in this scenario: User Interviews, to get in depth findings about the users.

Primary Research

This was more of a qualitative research, so I didn't opt for any surveys and began directly with the User Interviews. I interviewed 6 user in total and the pre-requisites for the selection of the users was:

Here are the findings from the User Interviews Conducted:
