Using our public anchor sets to compare attainment across schools

(Please note that a school will need to be subscribed to our APW national products in order to be able to access the public anchor sets. If you want to do something similar across Secondary schools, please contact the support desk.)

In order to carry out the same task across different primary schools but want to make sure that all the pupils are on the same scale, we link school tasks together using our public anchors.

You and the schools will need to follow these steps:

  1. Agree with the schools the task you are going to carry out

You will of course need to agree the task you are going to use and the pupils who will take part. We suggest that you include one particular year group and you use our APW national tasks from the previous year.

The format of the APW tasks are as follows:

Year 1 - Fiction task

Year 2 - Fiction task

Year 3 - Fiction task

Year 4 - Fiction task

Year 5 - Fiction task

Year 6 - Fiction task

Year 4 (optional) - Non-fiction task

Year 5 (optional) - Non-fiction task

So, for example, to carry out a Year 1 Fiction Task across your schools, use the Year 1 task from last year. If you want to change the task type, or the pupils have done that task before, choose a task from a neighbouring year group. For example, for a Year 3 Non-Fiction task across your schools, use the Year 4 non-fiction task from last year. If you want any advice about which task to use, or get access to last year's tasks, do ask us on our support desk.

  1. Agree with the schools on the template to use

You need to agree on the number of pages and the format of the pages to use. We suggest the same as the APW national tasks, namely:

The instructions to set up the template are here. Make sure all the schools set the same template for the task.
