Carol M Sainthilaire of Saint Impact Ventures

What inspired you to start your business?

After years of leading nonprofits and fighting for housing justice, I saw how many women — especially Latina business owners and community leaders — struggled to access the same tools, strategies, and support that larger organizations take for granted. I started Saint Impact Ventures to help them build strong foundations, grow sustainably, and make a lasting impact in their communities.

What were your biggest fears or doubts before taking the leap — and what gave you the courage to go for it?

My biggest fear was leaving the security of a full-time leadership role. I worried about financial stability, whether clients would trust me, and how to balance mission-driven work with running a business. What gave me courage was seeing other women I admire bet on themselves — and realizing I could build something that aligns with my values while supporting others to do the same.

What’s been your biggest win and biggest challenge in your first year?

My biggest win was launching Saint Impact Ventures publicly and landing my first paying client while still transitioning out of my nonprofit executive role. My biggest challenge has been wearing all the hats — consultant, COO, CFO, and marketing director — while building the systems that keep everything running. Every challenge, though, has taught me something new.

What does success look like to you, and what type of impact are you hoping to make?

To me, success means financial freedom and stability while helping women- and Latina-owned businesses grow and reinvest in their communities. I want to create ripple effects — when these businesses thrive, they create jobs, inspire others, and give back to causes that matter to them.

Why do you believe people should bet on themselves and take the leap to start a business doing what they love?

Because no one is going to hand you permission. You have to create it. When you bet on yourself, you show your community and your clients what’s possible. Doing what you love isn’t just about passion — it’s about building a life and career that make you proud.

If chosen for this grant, how would it help you continue building your business?

This grant would allow me to invest in better systems, marketing, and client onboarding to scale sustainably and avoid burnout. It would also help me create bilingual resources in English and Spanish to make my services more accessible — especially for Latina entrepreneurs in my community.
