Prepare for the death
The location of where someone dies (home, hospital, aged care facility) can influence who takes care of these matters. Generally regardless of where a patient dies, consideration needs to be given to the following.
- Ensure family and friends have the opportunity to spend time with the patient in privacy, and that they are supported with any concerns they may have.
- Sensitivity to the specific needs related to culture - the family may wish to attend to these or be involved.
- Certification of Death by a medical practitioner.
- Contact the nominated (by family) funeral director.
- Consider whether a minister of religion is required.
- Consider referral for bereavement follow up.
