Every tech company in the Bay Area is required by Silicon Valley law to have noble means, ambition, and a world-changing vision.
For example: Google: “Our mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Facebook: “Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.” Palantir: “Our mission is to help our users, the people doing the hard work on complex, real-world problems.” Juul: ”Juul Labs is on a mission to transition the world's billion adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes, eliminate their use, and combat underage usage of our products.”
Here at Candid Resumes, "Our mission is to help businesses save time and hire the best applicants by quantifying and dehumanizing their applicants."
Like the other tech companies, Candid aims to do good in the world. But, in the process, we do evil things to applicants. Unlike the others, Candid is a fake startup. It isn’t real. But the technology and algorithms behind our resume screener are very real. So real, they are already being used by companies today within their own recruiting pipelines to screen resumes.
We created Candid for several reasons. 1) We find it absurd that Silicon Valley loves to over-optimize and self-rationalize its own goodness by ignoring externalities. It's absurd how Candid could be accepted as a real and successful startup. 2) We want to question people's assumptions and biases when hiring or building models. It's easier to empathize when you get to experience being on the losing side of the algorithm. 3) We find it funny how every startup website and app looks the same. 4) We are low key tired of startups like WeWork, Doordash, and Lime. We hope to see more people invest and work on more fulfilling companies.
