Keep me awake in moments of wonder: for I want to smell jasmine on my way and linger, instead of walking by and missing it. I want to close my eyes and follow the scent with my nose, finding the plant in the opposite direction. And I want to stay there, gently rubbing the petals between my fingers to hold on to their perfume a little bit longer.
Keep me awake in moments of struggle: for I want to acknowledge my fear of belonging, of being vulnerable, of not being enough. I want to look myself in the mirror and recognize common traits between my parents and me, and understand that I am more than one, that I cannot change my history and still be my own person. But I can transform my present and aspire to a future where I will be proud to be called by my full name.
Keep me awake in moments of disappointment: for I am human, no matter what I do. I belong to a mortal species that talks and thinks and invents and creates, yet often is nothing but superior. I want to find motivation and hope on the verge of adversity, consciously knowing that I need to fight for what is worth preserving on this earth.
Keep me awake in moments of gratitude: for I want to hold on to the words written on paper by someone I barely know but had the chance to interact with for a short period of time. And yet that period, for them, was transformative. They expressed their gratitude toward me. I shed a tear, said “thank you,” and found my heart growing bigger and my inspiration larger.
My practice keeps me awake to experience the world for as long as I can. At a crossroad, my practice saved me—literally and metaphorically. We all come across challenging moments; we all need tools. My tool saved me and gave me a reason for being—I cannot find a better way to walk through life than by sharing this tool for others to grasp.
