Introduction

This Practice-Based Research module brings together the theories and methodologies of creative media with practice and technical production.  You will make independent projects that engage with critical aspects of media by developing creative artefacts.  Combining theory and practice, you will undertake interdisciplinary research that addresses critical enquiry through audiovisual media.

Based on your proposed project and research question, you will develop a Practice-Based Research project that includes a Creative Media Artefact and a written Essay - these will be developed in weekly discussions with your allocated supervisor. This Notion template is for you to record and reflect on your process: for us to understand all of the work, challenges, and creative decisions you make for your project, you will present them here.

Completing the suggested sections here (or editing and adding your own) will allow you to show off how much work, research, analysis, reflection, experimentation, prototyping, reflection again, and discussion you have pursued in order to develop your project!

Using Notion

In this Notion template you will find a suggested framework for recording the research, technical development, and general progress of your project. It will be used to show details of your progress, and to ensure you present your research/production journey in a reflective manner.

You can edit this template as much as you see fit, to accommodate your own projects and workflow - so please do see what else you can do with Notion! It is a useful tool for creating image/video libraries, task indexes, calendars and much more. The Moodle page for this module contains all key dates and details for sessions and deadlines, so the calendar below can be used by you to personalise, and to organise your own time. You will have a session dedicated to introducing you to this Notion template, and how you can use it (see Moodle).

In the ‘Practice-Based Research Project’ sections below, you will - track and document your progress, making your workflow clear. Please use mainly notes, captions, and images in this section (so make sure you take and archive plenty of photos, notes, sketches, mock-ups, and screenshots!)

In the ‘Reflection’ section, you will fill write a 700 word reflection on what you have done: what you have tested and/or achieved and why. How do your experiments relate to your developing understanding of the topic, your media, and your practice?
