The Brazilian government will grant humanitarian visas to Ukrainian refugees. The granting of a temporary visa and a residence permit for the purpose of humanitarian reception to Ukrainian nationals and stateless persons who have been affected or displaced by the situation of armed conflict in Ukraine was defined on March 3, 2022 with the publication of Interministerial Ordinance No., already in force and valid until August 31, 2022.

The expected period of residence is two years, extendable. In the case of a child, adolescent, or any relatively incapable individual, the application for a residence permit may be made by either parent, as well as by a representative or legal assistant, as the case may be, individually or jointly.

There are 2 options:

  1. Request the visa in the Brazilian consulate at the Ukrainian Consulate/Embassy where the applicant resides in the moment;

  2. Come to Brazil as visitor, and request the residence at the Federal police. (Ukrainian citizen has visa exemption for 90 days in a period of 180 days);

    ***** For the residence request based on situation of refuge, It is not necessary to legalize the documents in Ukraine prior coming to Brazil.

    ***** In case of lack of this document, it can be replaced by a simple declaration handwritten.

The residence is valid for 2 years and can be extended for undetermined period.

After submitting the residence request at the Federal police, the foreigner will receive a protocol, and, if the request is approved, the refugee may receive the Brazilian ID card (CRNM) within 90 days. Please, note that since the date of the request at the federal police, the foreigner can request the digital workbook and start working in Brazil, in the local payroll.

<aside> 💡 For now, the best suggestion would be traveling to Brazil and request the residence in country and not at the consulate, since Ukrainians have visa exemption. Even being a benefit for Ukrainian citizen, we should face miscommunication dealing with consulates.
