Documentation

Ensure the relevant transfusion documentation is signed and completed with the following:

• Date and time of start of transfusion
• Donation number of the component
• Volume of component transfused
• Observations undertaken before, during and after the transfusion
• Name of the health professional administering the transfusion
• Date and time of completion of transfusion
• If the transfusion achieved the desired effect
• Details of any reactions to the transfusion

Fully complete traceability documentation and return to HTL as per local policy.

Red cells essential facts:

Red cells have a shelf life of 35 days (unless irradiated) and must be stored at 2° - 6°C in an authorised blood fridge with an audible alarm system and functional temperature recorder - never in a domestic / drug fridge
