Care and Community Engagement

My city is a college town, and I will mainly be focusing on the community of the college students. This helps me to narrow my scope and provides me with a demographic which I am more connected to and understand better.

The lack of civic engagement, as well as general care for local issues, arose in my conversations and interviews with local residents. A few unique demographic circumstances combine to cause these problems:

• 2/3 of BYU students are from out-of-state, which means that they are less in touch with local issues
• As college students, there is a culture of moving at least once a year, sometimes more. This makes it difficult to form communities with neighbors
• Separation between Church and State
• Busy, stressed from balancing different responsibilities

Additionally, America in general is dealing with a civic engagement problem among college students. While young adults seem to be fairly engaged in volunteering, showing that they do care about issues, they engage in traditional civic participation a lot less than past generations.
