Survey Calculator:
(Work in Progress)
The survey calculator (below) will give baseline metrics for a photogrammetric survey. The ‘Survey Dashboard’ tab is configured for the PRS ‘Rayfin 6000 Mk1’ camera system. If those settings are changed, they can be found again on ‘Camera Spec Sheet’ tab.
To use the calculator enter all known data in the yellow Input cells. The turqoise cells on the right, are the generated output cells.
The output survey calculations are displayed in three sections; Calculated Results, Survey Parallel to Width, and Survey Parallel to Length.
The ‘Calculated Results’ section outputs information about the projected field of view of the camera, based on its altitude. It also outputs the Effective coverage of the camera based on desired overlap (line 6).
- Survey Altitude (H) - Reference distance of imaging sensor plane to the mean survey surface; measured in meters.
- Horizontal Survey Dimension (W) - Width dimension of survey box; measured in meters.
- Vertical Survey Dimension (L) - Length dimension of survey box; measured in meters.
- Image Capture Interval (IC) - Automated camera capture rate; measured in images per second.
- Survey Speed (SS) - ROV speed over ground (SOG); measured in meters per second.
- Horizontal Overlap (HO) - Survey overlap necessary for photomosaics and photogrammetry. Typically 20-50% for mosaics and 60-80% overlap is necessary for heavy relief 3D photogrammetry.
- Vertical Overlap (VO) - Value derived based on Image capture interval (IC) and Survey Speed (SS). Typically 20-50% for mosaics and 60-80% overlap is necessary for heavy relief 3D photogrammetry.
- Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) - This cell will give information about the camera focal distance (Cell 37) if unknown. Useful for determining camera attributes from an image. Measured in millimeters per pixel.
- Survey Time (T) - This cell allows you to instantly scale the current survey calculations to fit within a time constraint. Outputs are calculated to cells 38-44. Measured in hours.
- Sensor Width (SW) - Physical width dimension of the camera sensor; measured in millimeters.
- Sensor Length (SL) - Physical length dimension of the camera sensor; measured in millimeters.
- Focal Length (FL) - Focal length of lens attached to camera; measured in millimeters.
- Image Width (IW) - Number of pixels horizontally arranged along the camera sensor.
- Image Length (IL) - Number of pixels vertically arranged along the camera sensor.
- Horizontal field of view (HV) - projected horizontal field of view of camera lens; measured in degrees.
- Vertical field of view (VV) - projected vertical field of view; measured in degrees.
- Camera Megapixels - Derived camera resolution based on image pixels along width (IW) and image pixels along length (IL).
